Find My iPad App Leads Police to Thief’s Lair
April 2, 2013 - 2 minutes readA woman in Columbus, Ohio was able to bring the thief that ransacked her house to justice by using a common iPad app. A news report released by 10TV.com said that a thief had broken into the woman’s home and stolen two TVs, a Wii gaming system, video games and two iPads, among other items.
Using the “Find My iPhone” app, the police tracked the stolen iPad to her neighbors home. Officers executed a search warrant and entered the neighbors home, to recover the stolen goods. The find my iPhone app enables the owner of an apple iPhone, iPad, or Mac to track their lost or stolen device using GPS technology. According to Apple’s website, “If one of your Apple devices goes missing, iCloud can help
you figure out where you left it.”
By signing in through iCloud.com or using the “Find My iPhone” app you can see the missing Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on a map. On top of that you can use Lost Mode, which allows you to immediately lock your device and send it a message with a contact number. Whoever finds your phone can call you from the Lock screen without accessing the rest of the information on your mobile device.
As an iPhone app developer I recommend all iPhone or iPad users download this very useful and free iPhone/iPad app. Although in my opinion most of Apple’s apps are substandard and forced upon us (think Apple Maps), Find My iPhone works like a charm and comes in handy to recover your lost or stolen device with ease. We may even see some new updates to this app announced at Apple’s upcoming WWDC event.
