My AI Wrote This: Can I Get a Copyright?
March 29, 2022 - 4 minutes readWith artificial intelligence (AI) actively taking center stage on the global market, its rapid growth has caused many to question the ownership of AI-derived creations. In other words, who is the owner of the intellectual property rights associated with the product of Artificial Intelligence App development? And, how can these rights be protected?
In an upcoming virtual roundtable hosted by The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Marc Fischer, CEO and co-founder of Dogtown Media – a prominent app development firm with a presence in Los Angeles, New York, and London, seeks to put an end to the confusion surrounding AI and intellectual property rights. As a leader in mobile app development, Fischer has significant experience learning how to navigate intellectual property when developing new technologies, bringing mobile digital products to market, and using AI to help create these products and technologies.
The AI Revolution
There’s no denying that artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming nearly every aspect of our daily lives, from the way we work to the way we entertain ourselves. Now, while most of us envision AI being used primarily for business applications, AI is actually being used more and more within the creative realm. For instance, application developers are utilizing AI to help create a multitude of different products, from AI-generated code to music and art.
Unfortunately, the use of AI to create work raises potential red flags for intellectual property rights, particularly around copyright authorship, registration, and protection of the work. In other words, this usage of AI creates a series of challenges for developers to protect their intellectual property (IP) while simultaneously growing their companies.
Addressing the Theft of Intellectual Property
To address IP concerns, co-founder and CEO of Dogtown Media, Marc Fischer spoke at the event, “Intellectual Property in Mobile and Web Applications”. The Bangkok Thailand-based digital conference was hosted by ACT | The App Association in partnership with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) in Thailand.
During this event, Fischer urged government representatives, IP lawyers, developers, and entrepreneurs in Thailand, to understand the challenges of protecting intellectual property when developing mobile and web applications, as well as how preventative measures can be used to effectively limit IP risks and threats early on.
To further expand on this message in the upcoming webinar, Mr. Fischer will focus his efforts on discussing how AI is used to both create these modern works and protect them, the legal precedent for AI in copyright, and what the future may hold for copyrighted works developed using AI.
This widely attended webinar will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. ET, and will feature well-known panelists Sandra Aistars (Clinical Professor, Sr. Scholar & Sr. Fellow for Center for Copyright Research & Policy at Center for Intellectual Property x Innovation Policy, George Mason University School of Law), and Ian Slotin (SVP, Intellectual Property, NBCUniversal), and moderator Debbie Rose (Intellectual Property Fellow, the App Association).
