How Earning Pentagon Security Clearance Makes Apple Even More Profitable
May 21, 2013 - 2 minutes readAmid the congressional corporate tax charade taking place in Washington D.C., Apple, Inc. recently received the highest praise possible from a different branch of the US government. The Pentagon officially cleared the iPhone and iPad to be used by military and government employees after a lengthy review of the devices hardware and software security features.
Law enforcement agencies have openly admitted that iOS is in fact so secure that top intelligence agencies have been unable to overcome Apple’s advanced encryption technology. The Department of Justice, the DEA, and NSA consider iOS’s software encryption to be virtually impenetrable.
So what does this mean for Apple? Simply put, billions of dollars in additional revenue from iPhone and iPad sales. According to PCWorld, “The Pentagon uses approximately 600,000 mobile devices… The vast majority of those are BlackBerry, because BlackBerry established itself early on as a secure, manageable mobile platform. Now, BlackBerry will have to fight with Apple and Samsung to maintain that dominance.”
The US Air Force also has big plans for iOS and will switch from old paper based flight manuals and flight plans to a modern system using new iPads. Their initial order is expected to be in the range of 18,000 units.
As an iPad app developer in Los Angeles it is impressive how Apple has surpassed Blackberry in market share and dominance among organizations that value security features above all else. The opportunities for the iPhone app developer community are immense as apps appealing to government organizations and the military represent a burgeoning growth market.
