Apple Launches New iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
September 11, 2014 - 2 minutes readOn September 9 at the Flint Center in Cupertino, California, Apple marked a company first by unveiling multiple new iPhone devices at a single event. The company offered a sneak peek at two iPhone 6 devices, one with a 4.7-inch screen and another with a larger 5.5-inch screen. The smaller version will be known simply as the iPhone 6, with its larger counterpart to be marketed as the iPhone 6 Plus.
Both models offer a key improvement over the iPhone 5 in the form of a higher-resolution screen. The iPhone 6 has a 1334 x 750 display offering 326 pixels per inch, and the iPhone 6 Plus carries a 1920 x 1080 display at 401 pixels per inch. Other prominent features include:
- Reachability mode. By hitting the home button with a double touch, users will be able to bring the phone’s display within close proximity of their thumbs for easier navigation.
- Swipe mode. The phone’s app library will offer a swipe mode, allowing users to shuttle through installed apps by swiping left and right of the display’s edges.
- A8 “system on a chip” processors. Apple’s much-anticipated custom-designed processors, known as the A8 “system on a chip,” offer 25 percent more power and 50 percent more efficiency. It is one of the most powerful processors ever built into a handheld device in the history of the tech industry.
- Optical image stabilization. Apple has also built in an optical image stabilization feature, which will effectively eliminate unwanted motion blur from pictures taken by users. In addition, the built-in camera offers a “cinematic stabilization” mode, which automatically centers video images in the middle of the frame.
The device is expected to revolutionize the iPhone app developer landscape, with its powerful hardware opening up a world of new possibilities. The larger battery and bigger screens will also support a greater range of creative software products.
If you’re a Chicago app developer in search of a new platform, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will offer just what you’ve been looking for. Both devices are expected to be a major hit with consumers when they go on sale on Friday, September 19.
